A story about a dog.

This is a story about a dog. Meet “Brown Cow”.

“Brown Cow” appeared at our oil rig gate a few days ago. He is friendly, affectionate, and cute. But he has a devilish side to him.

“Brown Cow” approached the gate one day while Ken was on duty. Ken loves dogs, so he immediately named him. Brown Cow was better than “Stinky”, which was a more apt name for him. Brown Cow would come and go and appeared to be going back and forth between our RV and a house on the ranch next to where we are stationed. He comes and goes several times a day.

One day earlier this week, Chris was on duty, and Brown Cow was visiting (much to Chris’ dismay). She had taken her knitting bag with her so she could continue working on her knitting project after completing her steps by walking back and forth around the gate entrance. She had set the bag on the table outside, under our shelter. The day went on, and she eventually sat down to knit when she noticed two things: 1) The knitting bag wasn’t where she had left it, and 2) Brown Cow was gone

After going through all the steps to eliminate the possibility of early-onset Alzheimer’s, she began to wonder if Brown Cow had possibly taken the bag. When Ken awoke from his slumber, Chris shared the story. As Chris was back behind the RV dumping the gray (shower water) tank, she used her flashlight to mind her steps. This is when she discovered a single piece of yarn just beyond the property fence behind the RV.

The next day, Ken hopped the BARBED WIRE fence and went searching for the bag. He found a fresh roll of yarn, the half-kint sock, and a bottle of Visine.

Chris wrote a note and taped it to the gate for the ranch next to us. Later that day, the rancher texted Chris, letting her know that they would be on the lookout. A few hours later, the rancher appeared on his four-wheeler, letting Chris know that he would have a drive around. A few minutes later, he reappeared with the missing knitting bag. He also shared that “Brown Cow is actually named “Bert” and that someoneabandoned him at the ranch several weeks ago. He has a history of theft; he stole the rancher’s belt and left it in the middle of the road!!!

All is well that ends well…The knitting bag has been returned (and washed), the socks have been finished, and Bert still stops by for a visit!
