Gate Guarding Update – 11/25/25
We had pretty well accepted the idea that the soonest we would get a gate would be December 1, so we set about getting settled in for a week of doing nothing.
On Friday, we journeyed off to visit San Antonio and the Alamo. Both were fun and interesting. We ate lunch at Casa Rio, located along the River Walk in San Antonio, and then took a riverboat ride to learn more about the town and some interesting facts about the river.
On Saturday, we relaxed in the morning, then attended Mass in Poteet, TX, that evening. We started a puzzle, because that’s what we do when we need to pass some time.
On Sunday, as we were about 3/4 done with the puzzle, we got a call from our gate guard recruiter asking if we wanted to accept a job at an oil drilling site near Whitsett, Texas. Well, is the Pope Catholic?? Heck YES, we will accept the gate! So, she sent us a GPS PIN of the location, and we set off to scope out the lay of the land. By the time we got there, it was already dark, but we understood the travel and location better. As the details came in via text, we learned that we would need to be at the gate location by 8:00am on Monday morning. As soon as we got back to the RV in the staging lot, we prepared the rig for a travel day and got hooked up to the truck. This way, all we would need to do in the morning was dump the tanks, disconnect water, power, and sewer, and hit the road.
We were up at 5:30am so that we would have time before pulling out and be sure to arrive at the gate location early.
We got to the gate at 7:30am, met the support team (two guys who deliver the utility trailer), and got set up on the site. By 8:30am, we were logging in traffic!!!
We will do another post soon describing the whole gate-guarding job at an oil drilling site. But, for now, please know that prayer works!!! We appreciate all of you who prayed for us to get a gate sooner, rather than later, and those who send us positive vibes!
Below is a picture of our setup. Oil drilling sites are typically out in the middle of nowhere, on a large ranch. There are no utilities available, so the security company provides a flatbed trailer with a large diesel generator, a 250-gallon tank of diesel for the generator, a 500-gallon tank of fresh non-potable water, and a 500-gallon sewage tank, along with a water pump and macerator with a pump for the sewage.
This is a UNIQUE work-camping opportunity!!! What are you wondering? Ask your questions or share what you’re thinking in the comments below!!
We RVery Blessed!
