For our fifth annual family gathering, it was our oldest daughter’s turn to choose the location for and plan this year’s annual family gathering. Maybe you haven’t heard of Gruene Texas, but you may have heard of New Braunfels, Texas.
Gruene is located right next to New Braunfels. Nestled along the scenic banks of the Guadalupe River, Gruene, Texas, exudes a unique charm that transports visitors back in time. Steeped in history and oozing with Texan hospitality, this small town is a hidden gem for travelers seeking an authentic Southern experience.
Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, Gruene offers an array of activities that will capture your heart. Here are the top five things to do in Gruene, Texas.
1. Take a River Float:
As the Guadalupe River gently meanders through the town, it presents the perfect opportunity for visitors to indulge in a relaxing river float. Rent a tube, kayak, or canoe from one of the local outfitters and let the current carry you along the crystal-clear waters. Lots of people floated down the river while we were visiting, but we opted to just sit on a picnic bench IN the river and enjoy a few beverages and the tranquility of the space.
The scenic beauty of the surrounding landscape, coupled with the soothing sound of the water, makes for an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re seeking tranquility or a fun-filled day with family and friends, a river float in Gruene is an absolute must-do.
2. Wander through Historic Gruene:
One cannot visit Gruene without exploring its historic district. Stroll down the charming streets lined with rustic buildings and antique shops, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the past. The crown jewel of this district is Gruene Hall, Texas’s oldest continually operating dance hall. Established in 1878, this iconic venue has hosted legendary musicians and continues to be a vibrant spot for live country, blues, and Americana music.
Visitors can tap their toes to the tunes of local bands and enjoy a two-step or waltz on the well-worn wooden dance floor. If you’re in Gruene in July, like we were, be sure to bring a dew rag with you! Gruene Hall doesn’t have air-conditioning and they can really pack in the crowd wanting to see/hear the talent on stage. All around the hall are boutiques, eateries, and quaint shops, offering unique souvenirs and handcrafted treasures.
3. Savor Southern Cuisine and Spirits:
Gruene’s culinary scene is a delightful blend of Southern comfort food and Tex-Mex delights. Sample lip-smacking barbecue at The Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar, a rustic eatery housed in a renovated cotton gin mill, offering breathtaking views of the Guadalupe River. For some authentic Tex-Mex flavors, head to the Adobe Verde, where you can savor dishes like sizzling fajitas and mouthwatering enchiladas. Additionally, Gruene boasts its very own winery and distillery, where visitors can indulge in tastings of locally produced wines and spirits.
4. Explore Natural Beauty at Natural Bridge Caverns:
Just a short drive from Gruene, visitors can venture into the awe-inspiring Natural Bridge Caverns, an underground wonderland of stunning rock formations and underground chambers. Guided tours take guests on a mesmerizing journey through the depths of the Earth, unveiling the incredible formations that have taken thousands of years to develop.
